Celebrating Lunar New Year

San Diego’s Asian communities are an integral part of the city’s past, present, and future, and this is showcased in the vibrant Lunar New Year celebrations each year. Drawing on traditions from China, Vietnam, and many other Asian countries, February is brimming with the spirit of a new year, seen in everything from the observance of centuries-old culinary and craft traditions to the practice of honoring those around us and paying homage to ancestors. These are some of the signature celebrations you can visit as we welcome the Year of the Dog.

  • The Lunar New Year Festival at SDCCU Stadium, hosted by the Little Saigon San Diego Foundation from February 9-11, features a renowned Cultural Village, as well as dozens of food booths, artisans, carnival rides, live entertainment, and a beauty pageant.
  • The Chinese New Year Festival at Balboa Park, held at the International Cottages from February 24-25, offers up savory specialties like dumplings and bao for visitors as they prepare to watch the famed lion and dragon dances.
  • A dim sum destination, Jasmine Seafood Restaurant is a perfect place to honor the Lunar New Year. Take the whole family out for a feast, and learn about the techniques used by Jasmine’s master chefs, who hail from Hong Kong.
  • As a very appropriate addition to this year’s festivities, the Lunar New Year celebration at SeaWorld, held on select dates from January 30-February 21, will be featuring a Puppy Garden. You may or may not already have a dog of your own, but you’re bound to be tempted to adopt another. Even if you resist (and more power to you if you do), it’s still a great chance to learn about the work area shelters do, and even sign up to volunteer.
